The aim of this study is to analyze the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan’s thought about the unconscious. Some consider that Lacan’s work has come to dominate film theory, is a central point of focus in feminist theory, and has become a major and apparently permanent influence in visual criticism. From very early on his work, Lacan says that the unconscious is structured like human language. For him desire is the metonymy of the want-to-be and symptoms are the metaphor of the analytic sense. It is thus the place where the analyst can read the screen which is consist of man’s desire and symptoms. The purpose of this article is to present a general outline of Lacan’s theory of the rhetoric of the unconscious and to suggest its relevance to the field of visual criticism. Lacan’s thought is complex and dense and in the space of a short article, I can hope only to provide the barest, most essential sense of it. I will proceed by how and why the analysis of the visual images can be helped by Lacanian psychoanalysis. This statement will provide a template for subsequently identifying and describing those aspects of the Lacanian system that bear most directly on the analysis of the visual images.
