Burkholderia pseudomallei에 의한 감염인 유비저는 주로 동남아시아 및 호주 북부지역에서 유행하며, 주로 농양 형성, 폐렴 및 패혈증으로 나타나 치명적인 경과를 보이는 질환이다. 환자는 당뇨를 가진 66세 남자로 캄보디아에 다녀온 3개월 후 패혈증으로 입원하였고 혈액배양 검사에서 B. pseudomallei가 동정되었다. B. pseudomallei 항균제 감수성 결과 carbapenem에 감수성, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole과 ceftazidime에 비감수성을 보였다. 균주에 감수성을 보이는 carbapenem계열 항균제 치료를 시행하였으나 균혈증은 지속되었고, 패혈성 쇼크 및 폐렴이 관찰되었으며 ARDS로 진행하여 입원 12일째 사망하였다. 이는 국내에서 ceftazidime에 비감수성을 보인 첫 번째 사례로, 점차 국내 유입 가능성이 높은 그리고 치명적인 임상경과를 보이는 B. pseudomallei 감염의 중요성에 대해 보고하는 바이다.
