최근 임상 연구들은 우울증 환자에서 BDNF는 감소하고,
우울증의 치료 후에는 BDNF가 증가하여 정상화된다는 결
과를 제시하고 있다. 동물 연구와 임상 연구 모두에서 BDNF의
감소가 직접적으로 우울증을 유발하는지 여부는 명
확하지 않다. 그러나 우울증에서 BDNF 농도의 저하는 우
울증으로 인한 일종의 신경망의 기능부전 상태를 반영한다
고 생각된다.
따라서 향후 더 많은 임상 연구들이 진행되어 BDNF에
대한 지식이 더 쌓이고, 혈중 BDNF 측정 방법이 안정되면,
혈중에서 측정되는 BDNF 농도가 우울증의 심각도, 임상적
특징, 또는 우울증의 치료반응에 대한 생물학적 지표가 될
수 있을 것이다.
