The purpose of this study was to improve students’ abilities to construct concept maps of biological propositions with adverbial phrases or clauses. This study investigated the effects of an alternative method of constructing concept maps of biological propositions with adverbial phrases or clauses that were difficult to construct by using the traditional method. For this study, 243 middle school students were divided into four groups. They made concept maps of biological propositions which have adverbial phrases or clauses by either the traditional method or an alternative one. The results showed that students who made concept maps with the traditional method had difficulties in concept mapping of biological propositions that have adverbial phrases or clauses. The reason it was difficult to make concept maps was the reconstructing of propositions. The alternative concept mapping method was easier for students to construct than the traditional one. Furthermore, the concept maps constructed by the alternative method had clearer meanings of adverbial phrases or clauses than the concept maps constructed by the traditional method.
