This study investigated social traits of students who major in science education including biology education at Seoul National University, the factors affecting the procedures of entering into the college of education and of choosing teaching as a career, and the views of pre-service teacher education program. The students studied mostly have stable socioeconomic backgrounds regardless of the major and their parents mainly influenced the procedures of entering into the college of education. The parental influence was stronger on the students who major in biology education than the other students. The ratio of students with the hopes of being teacher at the entrance into the college was also relatively lower in the students majoring in biology education. Although most of the students chose the departments in science education with double motivations of an interest in science and teaching, the students majoring in biology education showed relatively low interest in biology itself. Among the students who hoped to be teacher at the entrance, 32% of the students changed their mind from "to choose teaching" to "to choose other profession" or "not yet decide". Socioeconomic treatment as well as meaningfulness and aptitude influenced the procedures of choosing teaching profession. The burden of a teacher certification examination and dissatisfaction with the socioeconomic status of teaching profession weakened the motivation of choosing teaching as a career regardless of the major. It was also found that the prospective science teachers were dissatisfied with pre-service teacher education program at the curricular, professional, and pedagogical levels.
