In this paper, I analyze the syntactic structures of ambiguous English sentences. Sentences which contain a coordinate conjunction e.g. and may have two separate syntactic structures. Unfamiliarity with the syntax underlying these sentences will not allow for adequate English to Korean translations. To solve this problem, I state that sentences which require surface and deep structures are embedded in the syntax. I will also show that meaning is comprehensible by way of words, phrases, and context which I base on Ives and Bursuk, as well as Dixon and Nessel’s approaches. Finally, to translate English into Korean accurately, I argue that translators must have syntactic knowledge of the lexical properties which play a significant role in determining the meaning as well as the structure of sentences.
