Geoffrey Chaucer is well-known not only as a talented poet but as a prominent translator. His representative translations include The Romaunt of the Rose and The Boece, which are rendered from a popular French romance and from a Roman philosophical work respectively. The present study is focused on the two translations with an aim to illuminate the politics of Chaucer and his translations. To begin with, this study shows that though he is closely connected to political world all through his mature life, his poems characteristically a-political. Then by discussing the two translations, The Wycliffite Bible, a Bible translation by the followers of Wyclif the church reformer, and The Polychronicon, Trevisa's translation of a Latin encyclopedia, this study attempts to examine the possibility that a translation may play a certain political role under a specific historial situation. After these preliminary investigation, this study asserts that though the poet Chaucer is a-political, his two translations The Romaunt of the Rose and The Boece reveal political aspects distinctively. The politics of Chaucer is notably shown in his resistance to the domination of French and Roman cultures by means of his creative recreation of his sources. Political aspects of Chaucer's translations are also prominent in that the two translations play significant political roles in a certain power relations.
