The purpose of the present study was to examine the impact of physical activities on peer acceptance via a longitudinal study using panel data covering both a transition school period and a non-transition school period. We predicted that peer acceptance would be enhanced over time in the transition school period whereas it would deteriorate as students should develop social relationships with new peers during the non-transition school period. Therefore, it was expected that peer acceptance would show a nonlinear pattern where peer acceptance increases during the transition school period, and then it decreases during the during the non-transition school period. For this study, we obtained panel data from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute and used 2,008 observations (female 953) for the final analysis. The results show that the amount of physical activity increases as the grade level increases and that peer acceptance increases from 4th to 6th grade in elementary school but declines in the 1st grade of middle school. The results of the latent growth curve modeling did not statistically support our predictions, but the results of the regression analysis showed that physical activities during the transition school period have more positive effects on peer acceptance than physical activities during the non-transition school period. Based on the results, it was concluded that a hierarchical linear modeling(HLM) based on regression analysis is a more appropriate analytical approach to explain the nonlinear pattern of the relationship between physical activity and peer acceptance over time than a latent growth curve modeling.
