This article is concerned with the phonetic changes of Pali – Sanskrit words in Thai by presenting a difference of phonetic system between Pali – Sanskrit and Thai language, which is a main cause of the changes when loan words from Pali – Sanskrit are used in Thai. The phonetic changes, which are the changes of sound of vowels and consonants, have many categories, i.e. the modification of property of sound, the modification of property and the place of articulation of sound, the modification of property and quality of pronunciation, the modification of type of sound, the modification of type and property of sound, the modification of the place of articulation, the modification of quality of pronunciation, the modification of type, property and the place of articulation of sound. Apart from these there are also the modification of tone, the addition of sounds and syllables and the deletion of sounds and syllables. By knowing the phonetic changes of words borrowed from Pali - Sanskrit, it may make us to more understand Thai language and it may be also useful for using Thai words more appropriately and efficiently
