The purpose of this article is to collect and describe the general rules and methods of reading Thai words for foreign students or Thai people who learn Thai. They can be used as primary rules for reading and pronouncing Thai words. The general rules and methods of reading Thai words in this article are divided into three types: the words read by the general rules, the words read by the people’s favour and the methods of reading Thai proper nouns.
The general rules of reading Thai words are divided into various types depending on the words, namely the words having initial consonant, the consonant clusters, the homonymous words, the words having final consonant which is not pronounced as standard, some special consonants, the Pali-Sanskrit loanwords, the English loanwords, and other various symbols. Reading Thai words, some compound words and some special words, which can be read by the general rules and the people’s favour, are presented respectively. Lastly the methods of reading Thai proper nouns are described. Thai proper nouns can not be read by using any rules so it is the best way that the person, who would like to read Thai proper nouns, should check the methods of reading Thai proper nouns from Thai dictionary of the Royal Institute for avoiding a mistake.
