The Research on the Influence of Foreign Language in Thai
This thesis is aimed to study the influence of two foreign language in Thai, i.e. Chinese and Pali-Sanskrit. The analysis is based on the historical linguistics approaches, i.e. the language contact and etymology
The study is divided into 3 parts as following:
1. The status of Thai, Chinese and Pali-Sanskrit.
Thai and Chinese are isolating languages and belong to the Sino-Tibetan family, while Pali-Sanskrit is the inflectional languages and belongs to the Indo-European family.
2. The method of borrowing.
The Chinese lown word comes into the Thai because both languages are in the adjacent areas, whereas the Pali-Sanskrit loan word comes into Thai through religion and culture.
3. The influence of Chinese and Pali-Sanskrit in Thai.
The influence of Chinese in Thai is not strong as they belong to the same language family and also are the isolating language. The influence of Pali-Sanskrit in Thai is dominant on grammar since their linguistic characteristicsareabsolutely different.
