This study aims to investigate the effects of memorization and semantic mapping strategies on the vocabulary acquisition of elementary English learners and to explore the efficiency of two different strategies according to learners’ English level. In addition, this study examined the learners’ perceptions of memorization and semantic mapping strategies. During a six-week experiment, 69 fifth-graders were placed into three groups: experimental group 1 used the memorization strategy; experimental group 2 used the semantic mapping strategy, and the control group. The data were collected through vocabulary pre-tests, immediate vocabulary tests, and delayed vocabulary tests to measure the leaners’ short-term recall, long-term recall and recognition of vocabulary. Surveys and interviews were carried out to explore their perceptions of two vocabulary learning strategies. The results of the study suggest that semantic mapping strategies have significantly a positive effects on vocabulary acquisition. Furthermore, this result was reinforced by the learners’ positive perception toward the use of semantic mapping strategy.
