Namwongosa is one of the alternative versions of ChunHyangJun, circulated in Seoul during the 1860s. Today, it is in Paris, France. A photoprint of Namwongosa was first published in 1977, and two years later, an annotation of the novel was published. Although it has been almost thirty years since the first annotation of Namwongosa issued, there is no supplementary study on the book yet. In comparison with the case of 84 leaves version ChunHyangJun, the one which brought forth numerous researches and annotations since its first publication of the sort in the 1930s, the silence over Namwongosa seems quite bizarre. Since the studies of Pansori have been developed by focusing on the 84 leaves version ChunHyangJun mainly, the fact that the larger amount of efforts have been put into the 84 leaves version may be regarded as a matter of course. However, as Namwongosa has become more widely known, the fact that the studies of ChunHgyangJun concentrated on the 84 leaves version has gradually been recognized as a problem. At the same time, a new trend of discussion about the origin of Pansori is coming out. This paper attempts to deal with the problems that I found while I was working on the annotation of Namwongosa for the past few years. Those problems were divided into some categories. When classifying the unresolved words and phrases into Chinese character and Hangul, the latter is larger in number. I think it is much more difficult to grasp the meaning in the latter case. Often, the undefined parts of Chinese character does not closely relate to the actual story. On the contrary, many of the Hangul expressions directly lead to lessen both understanding and pleasure of reading the novel. There is an urgent necessity of annotation of Namwongosa for its researchers and readers. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to emphasize the recognition of its importance in the field of ChunHyangJun studies.
