This study describes how Pestalozzi and Choi Hyun-Bae confronted their respective generations, and came to meet intellectually through that process. It is physically impossible for these two scholars to have actually met in person because not only is there a difference of about 150 years between when they lived, but also because their respective birthplaces, Switzerland and the Korean peninsula, were completely different. However, a careful examination of their lives reveals that they ultimately transcended space and time such that they can be easily called contemporaries. In the societies of 17-18thcentury Switzerlandand 19-20thcentury Chosun, changes in governing structure were forcing citizens to adopt new life styles; these changes could not have been possible without the education of a new ideology. The fac that both ChoiHyun-Bae and Pestalozziboth worried about what effect this new education would have on society is the link between them. While Pestalozzi’s efforts were in response to the idea of making a living by “freely” working as a laborer, that is, the modernistic pedagogy reflecting the bourgeoisie understanding that the new era had to be based in independence and rationality, Choi Hyun-Bae’s efforts were rooted in response to the situation of colonial Chosun. The elucidation of such contemporaries who surpass the limits of space and time is not only a way to overcome the old paradigm of “East and West,” but also a path toward the liberation of “Korean Studies.”
