The world of Choi Myung-Ik`s novels had been formed under the special contexts of the modern/contemporary history of Korea, such as the loss of national sovereignty, Independence, Korean War, and North/South Divide. Nonettheless, most studies on Choi Myung-Ik up to the present time has focused upon his novels written before Korea`s Liberation. If any dealing with the novels written after Liberation, where they, centering around『Seosan Daesa』, have been referred to just as part of a great discourse, i.e., North Korean Literature. Choi Myung Ik had stepped in the world North Korean Literature as a central figure along with Liberation. As the subject matters of his novels he took land reform and labor realities North Korea espoused as the most important themes at that time. 『Maegryeong』has a profound significance in the sense that it reveals Choi`s such transition beginning right after Liberation an autobiographic way. With『Maegryeong』he can be evaluated to make an issue of the concrete historical realities of those days and create a new image of the personhood getting out of the self-conscious world of isolated individual. But it is also true that Choi`s political passions and obsession are reflected on in 『Maegryeong』faithful to the instructions from `Munyechong` because he could not but make a new start like a new novelist. With this novel, the simple schema of the victory of the positive realities over the negative realities came up in the space where disappeared Choi`s spirit of negation and criticism as a modernist intellectual. I think this shows not so much the Choi`s personal limitation as the general problems of North Korean Literature and art as a whole dominated by the political purposes of the Communist Party. When ideologies or wholeness are the only truth presiding over the concrete history, the role of literature is confined to the explanation and interpretation of the simply given. This is the reason why in Choi`s life of conversion as a novelist we can see the sufferings and wounds of the modern/contemporary history of Korean literature where the truth in literature was overwhelmed by ideology.
