From the onset of the modern enlightenment period, literary interest in “the child” motif increased explosively. Especially, from the middle of 1900 to before and after 1910 when the enlightenment had been getting more and more heated, child-related discussions had risen suddenly. Child-related nomenclatures began appearing in various ways and, at the same time, child-related publications increased rapidly. The space of all magazines started to fill the stacks of child stories. It was not an incidental occurrence. The sudden increase of child-related discussions followed as a natural consequence in the condition of historical status at that time, namely establishment of the modern state. The most important aspect of this was to produce members of the nation and they should belong to the name of it. The remained matter was the selection of ‘subject’ and to be people of the modern state. It seemed not to be difficult because the child was selected at once. The child was a symbol of “new”. An important mission for being the people was given to the child who was selected as the owner of the new world. Being the people meant to learn and to practice the requisite as members of the modern nation, namely it was just the work storing ‘memories of the people’. It was a problem, however, that the status of the modern enlightenment period was contradictory because the modern subject and the people’s position could not be agreed. The modern subject was a symbol of imperialism which watched for an opportunity to attack Choseon and the people’s status was just the colonial people. Therefore, the people of Choseon could not accept those, either. The historical situation was to enforce selecting one alternative. The people of Choseon could not have their own community. They should be isolated from their own life by force and incorporated into the new reorganized community. The way was to select either the modern subject (an imperialist) or the colonial people. But, it was ironical that the result selecting either was the same at all. The face of an imperialist was just a model that the colonial people should imitate finally.
