In "The Light Princess," George MacDonald enlarged the narrative scope of fairy tale adopting the form of fairy tale of "Sleeping Beauty,"and a kind of Romantic writing style. In this work MacDonald recovers love that king and queen didn't have through the prince and the princess. While both of them are self-centered, king and queen are different in their temperaments. Makemnoit, king's forgotten witch-princess, is an aggravated version of his own peevish self-centeredness. Through the Makemnoit's curse, a traditional introductory trope, the princess becomes lighted. The princess soars and floats when she wants to walk and is difficult to control because she is lighted. When she becomes 17 years old, she learns the pleasure of swimming in the lake, and also meets a young prince. This means she meets the origin of life, water, and falls in love with the prince. While she is swimming, she recovers her gravity slowly. Gravity can not be taught but gained from her experience. Then the draining of the lake is a symbol of the princess's emotional sterility. Through the prince's sacrifice of life to save the lake, The princess recovers her gravity and love to the Kingdom. The heavens respond with a purgative downpour, the lake is refilled. The witch becomes drowned in her vault, the prince revived, and the couple, of course, married. MacDonald, an inspired storyteller, incorporate and transform the fairy tale conventions and invigorate them with new life. His literary fairy tale "The Light Princess" maintains and develops the essential power of fairy tales and establishes their significant places in the modern literary form.
