This article aims to establish standards about grammar selection for teaching Korean as a foreign language. First and foremost, this study investigated the differences between school grammar and grammar for Korean for foreign learners(KFL) in order to detect problems in grammar for KFL. Then, attention was drawn to the standards for grammar hierarchy and grammar gradation order. Under the assumption that grammar for KFL is for successful communication in Korean, the study presented standards for grammar hierarchy and grammar gradation order: (1) learner-centeredness, (2) specific grammar area for a teacher and a student, and (3) spiral learning. This article also argued that, while grammar system at the advanced level should be presented separately, grammar system at the novice and intermediate level should be presented focusing on meaning and function of language structure. It is necessary for advanced learners to shortened grammar distance with native speakers of Korean. In other words, grammar system at the beginning level should be established aiming efficient communication focusing on meaning and function of grammar structure. Then, grammar system should be elaborated for the advanced learners along with developing grammar content which they can understand.
