The purpose of this study is to examine music educators' efforts for improvement of elementary school repertoire in the United States from 1870 to the 2005 and investigate the state of repertoire selection reflected in elementary music textbook series. Furthermore, this study explores implications for making repertoire innovations in the future of Korean music education based on American music educators' reform efforts. This study first overviews repertoire development history, scholars' current thoughts on repertoire selection and then analyzes repertoire contained in the music textbook series published by MacMillan and Silver Burdett in 2005 in terms of numbers, organizations, multicultural and style aspects, utilization of index. The conclusions of this study are as follows: 1) The analysis of repertoire selections contained in the music textbook series shows that American music educators made successful repertoire innovations by placing a great deal of weight on one's own music and world music. 2) The MENC's role was critical in making this successful repertoire improvements. 3) The current elementary music textbook series in the U.S. provides concrete evidence of successful repertoire innovations. 4) The most urgent problems that we have are lack of scholarly activities such as seminars, research studies in the area of school repertoire development. 5) The researcher recommends that we should develop a long-term master plan for repertoire reformation, establish principles and criteria for repertoire selection based on research studies, and develop repertoire database made easily accessible by everyone interested. It should be noted, however, that it took a half century for American music educators in making repertoire innovations. This fact implies that we need to make repertoire improvement efforts with a long-term plan and implement this task through gradual process step by step. Bringing a successful repertoire reform movement in the future will depend upon Korean music educators' active role.
