Chinese story telling is a popular entertainment in all part of China, and there are almost as many styles as localities. Along the Yangtze River, with Suo-chou as the center, the main types of storytelling is p'ing-t'an, the Suo-chou storytelling. P'ing-t'an, performed in the Su-chou dialect, is a collective term denoting two forms of story-telling: P'ing-hua, narration without music; and t'an-tz'u the singing-narrative. The music of the latter is the main concern of the present study. The primary purpose of this paper is to introduce of the basic understanding of the Chinese story telling, t'an-tz'u. The content of this study can be outlined as follows. In the chapter Ⅱ, the general understanding is outlined. chapter Ⅲ includes the history and development of t'an-tz'u. chapter Ⅳ discuses the four structual elements involved t'an-tz'u performances: narration, comic insertions, singing, and instrumental playing. Chapter Ⅴ is concerned with the educational systems of Chinese t'an-tz'u. In the chapter Ⅵ, the performing situation is discussed in the past and present of t'an-tz'u.
