The Music Culture of Leaf-blowing: A Free-reed Musical Instrument in ChinaLee Jin-weonA leaf is a free-reed musical instrument which can be heard in some traditional Chinese music ensembles. It is stretched at the sides with the thumbs and tensioned slightly by bending the thumbs, thereby raising or lowering the pitch. The tone of the instrument can be modified by cupping the hands so as to provide a resonant chamber. The earliest literary source on leaf-blowing is the Chuiye in the "Ba Yin Zhi Wai" section of Tong Dian by Du You. However, the content of Chuiye (which is a traditional name for leaf-blowing) regards two types of musical instrument sounded by means of single and double reeds. This has given rise to several misinterpretations by scholars and poets about chuiye. Presently, leaf-blowing can be found in the music of some Chinese ethnic minorities, such as the Yi, the Miao, the Achang, the Bai, and the Naxi. The performance of leaf-blowing serves various purposes. Among its functions, in ancient times it was used during warfare and hunting; it appears along with other musical instruments in ritual performances of various Chinese dynasties. Perhaps, the most interesting function of a leaf-blowing is its usage in musical courting between young lovers. This paper introduces a comparative research of a leaf-blowing in Korea and China.
