Johann Sebastian Bach's <Der Streit zwischen Phoebus und Pan> has long been considered to be a work that delivers both sophisticated and serious musical style and light, pleasurable one. Furthermore, it has been argued that Bach makes a musical comment on both styles, implicitly expressing his own preference to the former. Smusic even makes a strong statement that Phoebus of the work whose music is associated with the serious represents the composer. The aim of this study is to explore the extant to which this perspective tells us about the true nature of the composition. By analyzing the text and music of the work, this study illustrates various ways in which Bach, not necessarily being judgemental, combines one style from another, often creating an ironic statement about each musical style. After examining the text and the music, this study proposes that <Der Streit zwischen Phoebus und Pan> does not attempt to comment on the musical styles available during the period in which Bach lived and worked. Instead, this study argues that what Bach wishes to achieve in this work is to engage his audience into the musical discourse that he creates, thereby directly communicating them through his composition. Bach's involvement with the Collegium musicum of 1730s allows him to fulfill this purpose.
