Expression was the primary concern in 18th-century musical thought and practice. The expression of the ruling character of each section in the music was represented through a vocabulary of figures, rhythms, and styles with associations easily recognized by the audience. The term “topics” has been used by Leonard Ratner and other 18th-century scholars for this vocabulary. The term designates commonplace or conventional languages in music. The topics familiar to composers and audiences of the Classic period include a variety of dances and characteristic styles as march, singing style, brilliant style, “Sturm und Drang,” learned style, and ombra style etc. The purpose of the paper is to discern the composer’s manipulation of topics to understand the expressive intent of music in the Classic period. Considering 18th-century theoretical writings on the expression of feelings or passions, the conventional musical styles and figures--topics--in works of Mozart and Haydn were examined. The analysis in contexts of topics helps to recognize these expressive qualities and provides a clue how to listen and perform Classic music reflecting the poetic implications of the composer’s own idea.
