A Comparative Study on the Theme of 'Quest Hero' in the Growth Novel - Centering on Kim Ju Yeong's Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds and Aitmatov's A White Ship - Kim, Hye-Young This thesis scrutinized what epical structures were shown from the subjects on hero search and what factor leaded the difference in the modern novels by expanding the subjects which appeared in the diachronic intricacies from the myths to the novels at a synchronic level. This thesis selected two works, Kim Ju Yeong's "Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds" and Aitmatov‘s "A White Ship", to discuss on this task. While a boy in " A White Ship" selects death at the gate of growth, 'I' in "Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds" grows up into a grown-up. This thesis considered it to be possible because 'I' didn't contrast reality with illusion excessively and in addition, because 'I' could reconstruct the past from intricacy of the present through recollection. Furthermore, this thesis considered it originated from the cultural difference, background of two works, that though two works, identically, began from the scarce situation and went through the course of search, they had differences in epical structure. Father in "Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds" has an ideology of division, but " A White Ship" has a relation with identity of a community. So, this thesis considered that the brother's death meant that finding the father in "Fishermen Don't Break off Reeds" couldn't pass an organizational wall of ideology, but the boy's death in " A White Ship" was nearly suggestion of sacrifice that without recovering identity of the community, it was impossible to rescue humans.
