This paper focused in Chejudo's cognition of Japan, pillage of Chejudo fishing ground and Chejudo people's correspondence since Port opening. I investigated about Japanese fishermen's moving to Chejudo with new historical material.
Through this research, I could confirm following truths.
First, Japan thought of Chejudo as important strategic area from the Port Hamilton occupation event in 1885. Japan dispatched informers in Chejudo to protect Japanese fishermen at the time of Chejudo popular uprising in 1901. It was because Japan had aggressive intention about Chejudo fishing ground.
Second, Japanese fishermen's pillage about Chejudo fishing ground was violent and coercionary first time. Therefore, Japanese fishermen were bumped on Chejudo fishermen's strong resistance from 1887 to 1892, and killing and injuring about them happened consecutively. But, in the 1890s, Japanese fishermen moved in Chejudo and settled regularly from latter half.
Third, killing and injuring event of Leemansong(李晩松) and Yangjongsin(梁宗信) was not incidental and simple dispute. This was intentional stirring up of Japan. And the most killing and injuring events were pillages extended in the several villages. Also, it was confrontation with aboriginality influence and external influence that enclosed regional social rights and privileges.
Finally, Chejudo people's correspondence about Japanese fishermen was antinomy. When Japanese fishermen's pillage was begun in the 1880s, Chejudo people stood strongly. But, in the 1890s, Chejudo people tried to secure rights and privileges with Japan fishermen from latter half.
