Despite of C. S. Lewis’s reputation in children’s fantastic literature and Christian apologetics, there has been relatively little discussion of Lewis’s SF writings and his views on science. At the juncture of the fourth revolution of the big data and the gradual substitution of humans by artificial intelligence, it is a very meaningful attempt for the next generation to find ways to narrow the gap between science and religion. Especially through the religious science fiction, C. S. Lewis warns us that in a modern society the confrontation between religion and science is rapidly deepening our trouble of living a wise life. And he suggests us that there must be a solution to relive this conflict. To find out C. S. Lewis’s viewpoint in science and theology, this study mainly examines C. S. Lewis’s The Cosmic Trilogy, namely, Outside the Silent Planet (1938), Perelandra (1943), and That Hideous Strength (1945). Also, after reading his other nonfiction writings such as The Abolition of Man, The World’s Last Night and other religious and biographical essays, this study focuses on Lewis’s opinions on Christian thought and science in terms of "science criticism by religion" and "fusion of science and religion". After the loss of his beloved mother, C. S. Lewis once believed in the materialism of what he called naturalism but later converted to Christianity in the Inklings group at Oxford University. As a medieval researcher and Christian theologian, Lewis regards the modern civilization represented by science as the production of dangerous ambition which drives us far from the humble, merciful, and simple truth. He believes that the new discoveries in science are deepening our life mysteries rather than clarifying them. Lewis’s science fiction trilogy are stories which well display his Christian worldview which is not concretely illustrated in many of his Christian apotheosis writings. His SF trilogy is also a work of art that shows readers his defamiliarized Eden and heaven more precisely in the form of the mythical cloaked science fiction. In this aspect C. S. Lewis’s SF series have more important value than his nonfiction apologetic writings which are wellknown yet oftentimes obscure.
