In this study, the 1950s ― translations of C. D. Lewis’s works on poetics such as “The poetic image”, etc. is considered. Especially, this research focuses on the analysis of the poetic idea and image included in his works and the literary background and significance of the translations of his works on the poetics.
So far, there has been few studies on C. D. Lewis although lots of researches on the relations between Korea poems and ‘new country group’ was done. Therefore, this study aims to examine the importance of his works on Korea modernism poetry by analyzing the translations of his writings such as Poetry for You, A Hope for Poetry, and The Poetic Image.
First of all, the situation on Korean literature in the 1950s and the reason why C. D. Lewis’ works were translated are presented. In the publications, he held to the opinion that poets reflect their historical and social experiences in their poems. Therefore, it can be considered that the translation itself suggests a new value of the poem compositions which is different from the ideology of literature of the previous generation, e.g., purity, traditionality, eternity, etc.
Poetry for You and A Hope for Poetry were translated to make the public easy to understand the poetry and to give an exemplary model of modern poetry to the Korean world of poetry in the 1950s, respectively. The Poetic Image was also helpful to Korean poets since it presented thoughtful discussions regarding poetic imagery. The common perspective on these three books is the poetic attitude that a poet’s real experiences have to pervade his/her poems since the poet is sensitive to reality. From this viewpoint, it can be regarded that his works established the foundation of the poetry of participation in the 1960s after the introduction in the 1950s.
In conclusion, the translations of the works of C. D. Lewis kept the literary point of view of the previous generation in check and paved the way for finding a new possibility of Korea modern poetry. Accordingly, this study introduces an interesting opinion which the theoretical stand of ‘new country group’ pertaining to the poetry of participation in the 1960s had already been stated by the translation of the three books of C. D. Lewis.

C. D. 루이스(Cecil Day Lewis)는 1930년대 영국의 ‘뉴 컨트리파’의 중심축을 이루는 시인이자 시론가이다. 잘 알려져 있듯이, ‘뉴 컨트리파’는 역사적이고 사회적인 문제에 적극적으로 참여하는 시(인)를 강조하는데, 바로 이점에서 ‘뉴 컨트리파’의 시학은 전통적이고 재래적인 시를 비판하며 등장했던 한국의 현대시와 교접하게 된다. 김기림, 박인환, 김수영 등 한국 모더니즘 시인의 시세계 연구에서 W. H. 오든과 스티븐 스펜더가 비중 있게 다루어진 것은 그 이유 때문이었다. 그러나 1950년대 중반 이후로 실제로 C. D. 루이스의 시론서들이 번역, 유통되었음에도 불구하고 그와 한국 현대시와의 관련 연구는 거의 찾아볼 수 없었다. 이점에 착안해, 논문은 1950년대 발간된 C. D. 루이스의 시론에 관한 번역서들을 연구대상으로 삼아 그 시론서들이 내장하고 있는 시적 이념 및 특성을 정리하고, 1950년대에 C. D. 루이스의 시론 번역이 출현한 이유와 시론서 번역의 의미를 밝히고자 했다.
먼저 1950년대 한국의 문단적 상황을 살피고, C. D. 루이스의 시론서들이 번역된 배경을 고찰했다. C. D. 루이스의 시론서들은 각기 다른 방식으로 기술되었지만, 공통적으로 시인이 처한 역사적이고 사회적인 현실 문제들의 체험을 중시하고 그것을 시에 반영하는 태도를 견지했다. 이점에서 C. D. 루이스의 시론서 번역은 그 자체로 1950년대에 팽배해 있던 기성세대의 문학이념, 즉 순수성, 전통성, 영원성 등으로 정리되는 문학적 경향에 문제를 제기하고 그러한 상황에 대응하는 새로운 시 정신과 만나고 있다.
C. D. 루이스의 『시학입문』은 시의 중요성과 필요성을 역설하며 대중들이 쉽게 시에 접근할 수 있도록 도와주는 입문서의 성격을 띠었다. 『현대시론』은 영국 현대시의 역사와 특성들을 차례로 짚어주며 시의 본질적인 문제를 깊이 있게 다루었다. 또한 『현대시작법』은 시의 이미지에 대한 논의들을 구체적 사례를 들어 실제 창작자에게 도움이 될 수 있도록 기술했다. 세 권의 시론서를 통괄하고 있는 것은 기본적으로 시인은 현실에 민감한 자이며 그 현실 체험이 시에 반영되어야 한다는 시적 태도이다. 이러한 시적 태도는 시의 현대성에 대한 관심의 요구와 시인의 사회적 참여를 전제로 한다는 점에서, 1950년대 한국의 모더니즘 시와 만나게 되고 이후 1960년대의 참여시 운동의 이론적 기반을 이루는 데 영향을 주었다고 볼 수 있는 근거가 될 수 있다.
정리하면, C. D. 루이스의 시론 번역은 1950년대 우익 보수의 입장을 전면화했던 기성세대 중심의 문학담론 구조를 견제하며, 한국 현대시의 새로움 즉 다른 가능성을 모색할 수 있는 하나의 이론적 토대라 할 수 있다. 이점에서 1950년대에 이루어졌던 C. D. 루이스의 시론서 번역은 1960년대 참여시와의 관련성 아래 연구될 ‘뉴 컨트리파’ 시인들의 시적 태도 및 문학이념이 1950년대에 중반부터 한국의 문학 담론 속에서 적극적으로 요구되었음을 확인해 볼 수 있는 흥미로운 지점이 된다.
