The topic under discussion concerns metaphorical expressions. The research focuses upon structural metaphors such as 'life is a journey' and their relationship to verbs of motion in both the Korean and Chinese languages. It then goes on to analyse how such metaphors are expressed in these two languages. Firstly, the theory of structural metaphors is discussed. Then the metaphorical expressions both in Korean and Chinese language are analysed related to the manner - specifying verbs of motion like 'RUN/RUSH, FLY. This is based upon the dictionary definition of such verbs with a comparison between them in actual use. Reference is made to Korean and Chinese language newspaper articles. The research goes on to confirm that in both languages the metaphorical expressions with verbs like 'ttwida[뛰다]_to rush' to set foot (on)' are used in relation to the beginning or to the progress/continuity of an action. In this point the two languages share similarities. However, there are also some specific metaphors which can be found only in either Korean or Chinese. For instance, in Korean the verb 'nalda[날다]_to fly' (mostly in its complex form 'naraoda[날아오다]') can be used to express coincidental change, while in Chinese (in its complex form '騰飛[날아오르다]') it is used to express rapid development. Finally, based upon this research and with specific reference to the three verbs 'RUN/RUSH, FLY' the similarities and differences between the two languages are revealed. It is hoped that this research into the two languages will help to better understand the Korean and Chinese cultures and languages.
