This paper explains Zhu Xi's concept of learning(xue) as a sociopolitical agenda mainly through the analysis of his understanding of ‘great learning’ as idea and text. Zhu Xi's sociopolitical agenda provided a new paradigm for Chinese society undergoing changes after the Tang-Song transition period. Zhu Xi presented his learning as an all encompassing single process through which the mind and society can be brought to order. He emphasized the investigation of things (gewu) as the way to find the unity and avoid social anarchy. His learning program based on the investigation of things strives to achieve the goal of resolving the problem of the subjectivity of the mind without sacrificing each individual's moral autonomy. Zhu Xi's idea of learning as a sociopolitical agenda offered a convincing way of life by which one could pursue self-cultivation and participation in social and political life at the same time to Song literati who were localized but aspired to be part of nation-wide networks and to have influence over social and political agenda of the empire.
