The most striking feature of Lawrence’s literary world is its dualism, and his dualistic world is composed of two polarities of dark and light which symbolizes spirit and flesh respectively. These two polarized worlds are always prone to seek balance, or conciliation in the state of conflicts and fights. These two worlds come to fulfil balance by means of a spark of Holy Ghost, namely sexual union of man and woman. There are many common factors between Lawrence’s dualism and the Oriental one of dark and light. The Oriental dualism in the Book of Changes and Tao Te Ching is composed of the two cosmic elements, dark and light. These two elements seek integration by way of confrontation and change. Such an integration and harmony of the universe is governed by Taeguk or Tao that is the source of generation of the cosmos. There is a parallel between the two principles of the East and West in that the two polarized worlds seek balance by means of Holy Ghost in Lawrence, and Taeguk or Tao in the East which have similar properties to govern them. “The Woman Who Rode Away” and “Sun” are short stories which Lawrence wrote during his stay in Taos and after his return to Europe. They share one thing as a common motif: creative life power through escape from living death. They are utilizing the sun worship as a common subject, particularly in “The Woman Who Rode Away.” The woman hero serves as holy ghost in this story in order to meet the demands of the Aztec Indians to achieve the ecstasy of oneness in which dark(yin) and light(yang) meet. She is dedicated to the sun as the sacrifice so that they may achieve their fervent hopes to restore the sun to them. In “Sun” the sun itself serves as holy ghost for the heroine to reach her hope to achieve the sexual ecstasy.
