D. H. Lawrence has been regarded as the writer who had neglected the techniques in his works, compared with the other modernist writers like James Joyce. This is nothing but a superficial understanding. It is well noted Lawrence continuously incorporated in his work his contemporary marratiwes of philosophy and Literary principle: how much efforts he had made in order to write his works in the ways of consistent philosophy and literary principle. His thoughts and literary forms are elaborately harmonized in his works as the form of dualism: binary properties of dark and light as the most striking feature of Lawrence's literary world. His dualistic world is composed of two polarities of dark and light which symbolized spirit and flesh respectively. These two polarized worlds are always prone to seek balance, or conciliation in the state of conflicts and fights in order to achieve the ecstasy of oneness in which they encounter each other. These two worlds come to fulfil balance by means of a spark of Holy ghost, namely sexual union of man and woman. There are many common factors between Lawrence’s dualism and the oriental one of dark and light. “St. Mawr” is a novella which Lawrence wrote during his stay in Taos. This story and his other novels share one thing in common: binary properties of dark and light, particularly in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. This short novel is a symbolic dramatization of conflicts between dark vital power represented by the strong masculine horse named St. Mawr and the spiritual consciousness of light powerlessness as the elements to consume life vitality represented by Rico as an artist. The link between the two is a woman character called Rou instead of Connie in Lady Chatterley’s Lover. The result of this struggle is a symbolical victory of life fire over the mental sterility. In this short novel Lawrence put emphasis on the jet of life of the masculine horse and the spirit of the place which Lawrence dealt with in the later part of this story as the substitution of holy ghost. The two key images in this tale as the symbols of this story that play a role as holy ghost are St. Mawr and the spirit of the place in New Mexico.
