‘Mother-son Relationships’ in Sons and Lovers and The Sound and the FuryByungok Park (Dongguk U)There are some similarities between The Sound and the Fury and Sons and Lovers. Especially mother-son relationships of Jason Compson-Mrs Compson and Paul Morel-Mrs Morel are notable. Theses mother-son relationships are very close like lovers’. According to Lacan, a child in the Imaginary Order has to be separated from his mother by The-Law-of-the-Father and enter the Symbolic Order. Lacan explains this process with a theory of three phases of the Oedipus Complex. But Mr. Compson and Mr. Morel fails to intervene in the mother-son relationships as a castrating father. As a result their sons remain in the state of identification with their mothers. The reason of the fathers’ failure can be found in the family discord. In this situation Paul and Jason act like fathers and keep their pervert relationship with their mothers. Even though the behaviors of Jason and Paul as sons are very similar, there is one big difference between them. Jason tends to maintain the existing family situation, while Paul tries to break out of mother-son relationship and at last succeeds in getting released. In this sense, it is possible to view Paul as more mature person than Jason. The motive power that make Paul reaches the mature stage is his painting and the help from mother and Miriam. Trough the act of painting which symbolizes artistic activities, Paul acquires the power of getting out of trouble. Paul gets life-warmth from his mother, and Miriam directly stimulates him to work hard. Jason, however, does not have that kind of relationship with his mother or his lover, Lorraine. The relationship between Jason and Lorraine is very material. Jason is a very physical man and only clings to the money of material world, which is opposite to the painting of artistic world.
