Becoming-minor in Sons and LoversByunglyul Kim (Youngsan U)One of the current strengths of Lawrence studies has been developed in the face of profound ideological challenge to the contemporary ideas. Indeed, the very existence of the challenge suggests that, whatever assessment of his work critics may arrive at, Lawrence is a writer who cannot be ignored because the challenge he offers remains at the center of the current debate. Paul in Sons and Lovers reveals that the challenge can be achieved by negation. This essay approaches the subject of negation in Sons and Lovers in two ways: first, through the analysis of death; second, through the analysis of marriage. Examining the psychological aspects of the mercy killing of Mrs. Morel, this essay tries to explain how Mrs. Morel becomes the negative anima in Paul’s personality. Applying Jung’s interpretation of Beauty and the Beast to Paul’s relationship with Miriam, this essay also tries to reveal that Paul is an anti-hero who refuses to play the role of mythic hero.
