This study illuminates the rise of Lawrence’s original characterization of “another ego” is closely correlated with the gradual development of his theme of life and death as well as his vision of otherness. It leads to show “Daughters of the Vicar,” written between Sons and Lovers and The Rainbow, makes a transitional achievement in terms of theme and characterization. In “Daughters of the Vicar,” Lawrence’s theme of life and death represented in Sons and Lovers develops into the theme of true relationship based on the recognition of ‘the other’ and its ‘strangeness.’ Louisa’s awakening to Alfred’s otherness and vise versa lead them to a true relationship as two living things. It’s a step forward taken from Sons and Lovers where vitality of life which Paul finally pursues is contrasted to death principle implied in distorted relationship of possessive will. “Daughters of the Vicar,” in conveying its theme, embodies vividly ‘the whole man alive’ which is a new ego awakened from conventional old ego through life force. In so doing, “Daughters of the Vicar” renders an internal process of reaching a new phase of being as well. This embodiment of ‘the whole man alive,’ which is just embedded in Sons and Lovers, develops into Lawrence’s unique characterization of “another ego.” In The Rainbow, Lawrence makes an attempt to portray ‘impersonal being’ beyond ‘old stable ego.’
