Anima and Animus Figures in Women in LoveByunglyul Kim (Youngsan U)Women in Love is one of the most splendid English literary achievements not because of the prophesy embodied in the novel but because of Lawrence’s creation of negative anima and animus figures. Paying close attention to the failures of man-woman relationships in the novel, this essay tries to examine how these anima and animus figures make this novel vivid and unique. Two negative anima figures, Hermione and Gudrun, and two animus figures, Gerald and Loerke, are closely examined. Both Gurun and Hermione have the devouring aspect of the Great Mother. The most significant manifestaion of the anima takes the form of “a demon of death.” Two animus figures, Gerald and Loerke, have stress on “power” and “intellectualism” that might be due to the negative anima. As often represented in legends and myths by the female figure who asks riddles that men must answer or die, the stress appears in cruel reactions in these animus figures. Though Gudrun is dominated herself by destructive powers and is reduced to a condition of mechanical monotony and sterile meaninglesness, she is all the more vivid in that her fate is that of a sinner and the novel is a genre that deals with individuals in a social context whose sins are nothing but ours.
