The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of increased perceptual demands of the coincidence-anticipation task on temporal performance accuracy and consistency in individuals with mild mental retardation(MR). A total of 20 individuals with mild mental retardation performed 128 trials on a push-button coincidence-anticipation task on a Bassin Anticipation Timer under the four distinct stimulus speed conditions. Absolute error (AE) and variable error (VE) were greater for the middle-school aged individuals than high-school aged individuals with MR, which indicated the developmental differences between the two groups. Response accuracy increased as the stimulus velocity increased for the two groups. Overall response consistency decreased for the slow stimulus velocity speed and the fast stimulus velocity speed. This results suggested that an optimum relationship may exist between viewing time and response timing accuracy between 7mph and 11mph stimulus speeds, indicating that there seems to exist a coupling between viewing duration of the stimulus and overall accuracy, consistency, and bias of the coincidence-anticipation response. Future studies need to find the optimal speed and confirm this conclusion.
