The purpose of this study was to investigate the information processing speed of focal and peripheral vision by analyzing the effect of the velocity and presentation rang of moving stimulus on the reaction time. Eleven subjects performed reaction time task that required to press a button as rapidly as possible in response to the onset of stimulus. The stimulus was randomly presented in one of the five starting positions resulting in different gaze angles between gaze point of the subject and the position of stimulus onset. For each response, reaction time and eye movement pattern were measured. Reaction time was shown to be affected by the stimulus velocity and the position of stimulus onset. It decreased with creasing stimulus was presented at 0o, the focal vision condition, and it increased as the position of stimulus onset became farther from the center of gaze point, the peripheral vision conditions. This result might have occurred by the characteristics of the central mechanism of visual perception and control system. In addition, the increase in reaction time was greater when the stimulus was presented at 20o or-20o from the center of gaze point than when it was at 10o or -10o. Taken together, results of this experiment suggest that the velocity and presentation range of stimulus may affect visual information processing when a rapid response to a moving stimulus is required.
