A Preliminary Study for the Development of an Instrument to Measure Hope in People with Schizophrenia Choe, Kwi Soon1)·Kim, Hee Jung2)·Noh, Choon Hee3) 1) Department of Nursing, School of Medicine, Chung-Ang University 2) Department of Nursing, KyungWon College, 3) Division of Nursing, College of Medicine, Hallym University Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure hope in people with schizophrenia. Method: The preliminary instrument to measure hope in people with schizophrenia is a 40 item, three-point Likert scale. The instrument was tested with a convenience sample of 149 participants with schizophrenia. Construct validity was supported through the factor analysis. Result: Four factors were identified through factorial analysis: Factor 1. the essential meaning of hope, factor 2. what is hope for, factor 3. support systems for hope, and factor 4. spiritual dimension of hope. These four factors accounted for 51.9% of the total variance in the measure. Cronbach alpha was 0.97. Conclusion: The instrument to measure hope of people with schizophrenia will become a useful tool in the assessment of clients' hope state and in the evaluation of the effectiveness of hope-enhancing strategies.
