In this age of increased globalization and transnationalism, what does beauty mean for Korean immigrant children? This research seeks to understand how young Korean immigrant girls understand beauty within their local communities and cultures. It examines how cultural influences shape their self-image and ideas of beauty in everyday life. To date, most attention in the literature has been focused on critical examinations of the effects of media and the White standards of beauty on children. However, there is still little social attention focusing on Asian-American and immigrant children’s perspectives. Therefore, there is more urgency on studies exploring how children navigate disparate cultural expectations. I conducted an ethnographic case study in a small city in the northwest US, including participation observations and interviews with Korean immigrant girls and their parents. To make sense of the data, multiple poststructural theories including Mindy Blaise, Bronwyn Davies, and Bakhtinian text mapping are used. These theories reveal the multiple discourses about beauty in their narrative and works. Results indicate that as middle class Korean immigrant students who identify as Christians, and as active agents in the society, these girls show (a) their power relationship with their teachers or mothers, (b) their complex ways in which the girls borrowed and integrated ideas of beauty using local and societal knowledge (c) their different and contradictory subjectivities on the meanings of beauty, and (d) the girls’ strong Korean identity and various agencies showing their own ideas of what is beautiful. Their thoughts reveal how they think about and negotiate the diverse aesthetic activities in their everyday lives.
