This paper introduces the issues in relation to the inner freedom of religious conscience and conscientious realization in the public realm, asking the nature of the public through the thoughts of Augustin, Thomas Aquinas, and Martin Luther. In the discussion of the comparison and relationship among the above traditional Christian theologians, such issues surrounding conscience, sin, will, and freedom are engaged to explore the role of religious conscience in the public realm. After reviewing all the factors of the above issues briefly, this paper comes to a conclusion that the Korean Christianity needs to make diligent efforts to bridge the gap between the inner freedom of religious conscience and Christian principles in the public realm. To achieve this goal, Christians are called to cultivate a sense of conscience and morality in the public, to revise the standard of christian education, and to stress spiritual awakening and the reformation of faith.

양심의 자유는 내면적 자유로 이해되기 때문에 신앙과 연관이 되며 이를 기반으로 한 종교적 가치는 기본권에 영향을 미치는 주관적인 공권의 특성을 가지게된다. 전통적 기독교 사상에서 종교적 양심의 자유가 일반 도덕률을 넘어서 공공영역에서도 양심실현의 장이 형성되어 그 자유가 신장이 되었는지 아니면 제한되었는지 살펴보는 것은 매우 의미가 있다. 이 연구는 어거스틴, 아퀴나스, 루터의신학적인 사상들을 바탕으로 이 문제에 대해서 탐구하고 있다. 첫 째, 어거스틴에게 양심에 대한 해석은 크게 네 가지로 구분될 수 있다고 보는데 그것은 각각‘경험으로서의 양심’, ‘타락한 양심’, ‘은총으로 회복된 양심’, 그리고 ‘구속의 과정을 거치는 양심’이다. 둘 째, 아퀴나스에게 있어서 양심은 자연법에 근거한 보편적인 지식으로서 크게 네 가지로 나눠질 수 있다고 보는데 그것은 각각 영혼의본질과 연관된 도덕적 본질로서의 양심, 선의 물음에 적용되는 인식행위로서 ‘사려깊음(prudence)’과 연관된 도덕적 덕으로서의 양심, 행위로서의 양심, 그리고이성의 명령으로서의 양심으로 이해할 수 있다. 한편, 루터에게 양심은 하나님의은총이 머무르는 인간의 책임적 영역이 되면서도 스스로 구원의 문제를 해결하여보려는 인간의 자유의지가 작동하는 불신의 자리이다. 이와 같은 양심론을 통하여 기독교는 첫째, 도덕적 본질의 회복을 위하여 양심과 행위의 간극을 줄이는일과, 둘째, 양심의 교육과 훈련을 위한 지속적인 노력, 그리고 셋째, 현대 기독교에서 추구하는 영성에 대하여 참된 각성과 변화가 요청된다.
