Marian Forrester, the heroine in Willa Cather’s A Lost Lady, departs from the independent pioneer women portrayed in the author’s earlier prairie novels in the sense that she poses as a marker of her savior husband’s wealth and social standing in the community. While Marian performs graciously as a wife and hostess of a respectable, aristocratic household, her sensual attraction is emphasized in her hospitality to male guests from Denver and male adolescents from the community. Drawing attention to the heroine’s sexuality and the communal narrator’s eroticized gaze, this essay examines how Marian becomes an object of admiration, envy, and surveillance in the community and how the communal obsession with the heroine is complicated in sexual and class categories. Throughout the novel, Cather shows, the heroine is redefined socially and sexually by the collective narrator reflecting diverse groups of the community. Ultimately the essay argues that Marian’s sexuality serves as “a power to live” and to reclaim her life. The fact that the news of her death is given only indirectly in the epilogue, and only in a doubly-delayed manner, shows that her death is not considered a sort of poetic justice, and holds therefore no implications of punishment for her sexuality.
