Julian of Norwich does not like to be regarded singularly, that is individually, particularly or specially. Instead, she wants to be considered generally, that is, in oneness with her even Cristen, a common medieval term for fellow Christians. I argue in this paper that the two versions of A Revelation of Love, based on a series of religious visions she experiences in 1373, however, show subtle differences in the ways Julian generalizes and thus universalizes her experience and herself as author. Whereas the Short Text (ST) abounds in references to her even Cristen,in the Long Text (LT) the invocations of her even Cristen are far fewer in relation to the length of the text and concentrated only in its first half. In the ST, Julians tendency to generalize her experience can be seen as a reflection of her anxieties as a female visionary writing at a time when women who expressed opinions on spiritual matters were regarded with suspicion. In the LT, however, by adding the Parable of the Lord and Servant and the analogy Jesus as Mother, Julian deepens her universalizing tendency in her definition of self, rendered complex by her profound recognition of the particulars and consequently the differences that shape the ultimate formation of this oneness in God with her fellow Christians. She thus comes to terms with her own particularity, namely her gender, showing it to be, not something to be repressed or denied for her to identify with the even Cristen, but something that her even Cristen should come to accept and identify with.
