The purpose of this article is to analyze how academic articles on Thai politics by Korean scholars have been changed in their themes and characteristics. For this research, six main academic journals are analyzed as follows: Korean Political Science Review, The Korean Journal of International Relations, Journal of Korean Association of Thai Studies, the Southeast Asian Review, Southeast Asia Journal, and East Asian Studies. For 20 years from 1988 to 2008, sixty two articles on Thai politics were published from those journals.
During the past two decades, the number of academic articles has increased from 7 (1980s) to 22 (1990s) and 33 (2000s). Major research themes of those articles during last twenty years are political parties and elections (13 articles), political change and democratization (9 articles), the military (8 articles), foreign policy and international relations (6 articles), the king (6 articles), bureaucracy and political elite (5 articles), civil society and women (5 articles), political institution and local autonomy (3 articles), ethnic and religions conflicts (3 articles), political culture (2 articles), and others (2 articles).
The analysis result of those sixty two articles are summarized as follows. First, the improvement of quality as well as the increase in numbers of articles are outstanding. Second, the relative importance of Journal of Korean Association of Thai Studies is too high in terms of numbers in article publications. Fifty three percent of articles on Thai politics have been published in that journal. Third, major research themes have been changed during last two decades from the military, the king, bureaucracy and political elites before democratic transition to political change, democratization, political party and elections after the transition. Fourth, academic output of junior and leading scholars since 1990s has been worthy of close attention. Finally, research sources and method as well as field research have been continuously improved during the last two decades. Nevertheless, there is still room for further improvement: high dependency on library resources and on traditional research method. The ratio of research in the field is still very low.
