This research aims to study the origin of Arabic lexicography focused on 「 Kitāb al- ʻayn」. In the compilation of dictionaries, and other lexicographical works, the Arab scholars were very remarkable. The great interest in codification to make Arabic language a capable and uniform instrument of communication arose first in relation to Islam. And for the purpose of preserving the textual integrity and correct pronunciation of the Arabic language in the Qur'ān, the first linguistic studies were started and they were systematized by al-khalīl Ibn 'Ahmad who was considered as one of the greatest Arab linguists. 「Kitāb al- 'ayn」 is the first Arabic dictionary and it is characterized by the permutational or anagrammatical arrangement. al-khalīl chose to invent his own alphabetical order, and he arranged the letters according to their points of pronunciation, beginning with the throat letters or gutturals, and ending with the labials or lip- letters. Yet, though we may feel tempted to criticise al-khalīl severely for his confused arrangement, we must pay tribute to him for producing the first Arabic dictionary. The labour involved was considerable, the result magnificent in its way. It achieved its objects in drawing attention to the richness of the language, and accustomed scholars to the idea of a complete dictionary.
