The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of maternal stress as it relates to the mothers’ perceived social behaviors of their preschool children in both immigrant Korean families in the U.S. and Korean families in Korea. The subjects included 49 immigrant Korean mothers in the U.S. and 52 Korean mothers in Korea. Mothers of 4-to 6-year old children were administered a packet of the survey which assessed demographic information, their parenting stress, and the mothers’ perceptions of their children’s social behaviors. Data analysis revealed that mothers’ stress levels negatively correlated with the mothers’ perceptions of their children’s social skills, but positively correlated with the perceptions of their children’s behavioral problems in both groups. The findings suggested that stress reported by mothers, whether immigrant or nonimmigrant status, has the potential to influence children’s social skills and the development of children’s behavioral problems rated by mothers.
