The way we understand childhood varies considerably in different parts of the world. There is no way to find a universal consensus in reference to what children need to optimise their development, the environments that fulfil those needs or what type and level of protection is adequate to children in each specific age. In the middle of this huge diversity, the convention a on child’s rights, which is at present ratified by most countries, has established universal principles and a framework which apply to each and every child. However, childhood is not a homogeneous period.
