This paper examines the way the contemporary British novelist Angela Carter rewrites Shakespearean family narrative in Wise Children. Carter’s rewriting is among feminists’ revisionist tasks. When it comes to rewriting Shakespeare, feminist re-writers get female characters out of such traditional plots as doom them to an oppressive marriage or death, and seek to envision and revision figures who remain silent, marginalized, or demonized in the Shakespeare’s plays. Carter puts the marginalized daughters’ experiences and desires at the heart of Wise Children. In the novel the daughters seek and long for paternity. This very action, however, ends up with a comic debunking of paternal power and serves to clear a space for new voices or new visions of a maternal family. Members in this new family perform their identities artificially and theatrically. In particular, they exaggerate femininity, which aims to reveal that a woman’s gender identity is not ‘born’ or ‘natural’ but an artificial composition forced upon her in the patriarchal society. They freely form and transform their identities, constructing their new family narrative.
