Menari(메나리), in terms of function, is an agricultural work song, for example, a song of woodcutting, rice-planting, or gathering wild herbs. Maenari(매나리) is a song that can be sung not only in the mountains but also in the fields. For this reason, this study explores its etymological aspects based on the old dictionary and confirms that the song is ‘Menari(메나리)’ can be sung in the mountains. In addition, it investigates the influential relationship between ‘Sanyu-Ga(山遊歌)’ and ‘Sanyuhwa-Ga’(山有花歌).
The sentiment of ‘Sanyuhwa-Ga(山有花歌)’ mostly includes sighs and sorrow. First of all, the song lyrics containing the resentment and emptiness over the country’s ruination related to Baekje’s collapse were transmitted and handed down. There is also a song about the incident of Hyangrang(香娘), in which a virtuous woman who died in a river due to failing to endure her husband’s abuse, which was sung right before her death and was taught to a girl who gathered firewood. In addition, the lyrics includes the character of laboring, for example, when planting rice or picking weeds, or when gathering trees or picking herbs. In this way, ‘Sanyuhwa-Ga’(山有花歌) is based on the uncertainty of life, a discrepancy with the world, the lament of people’s own misfortune. There is the desire to return to the parents based on the lament for a lifetime sacrifice of working. This indicates that ‘Sanyuhwa-Ga(山有花歌)’ arose from the emotion based on the specific experience, transformed into a universal emotion in the process of being handed down as a folk song, and spread as a labor song sung by farmers. The study concludes that in this way the song lyrics came to be sung in the workplace as well as the mountains.
