This paper describes the meaning and distribution of the Korean nominal formative ‘ga(가)’, and claims that it has the meaning of highlighting the entity denoted by the preceding noun phrase and that it is distributed to noun phrases with the semantic role of “the entity responsible for the act or state” or to noun phrases that substantiate the state or the act taking place spontaneously. This claim contradicts the traditional view that ‘ga’ is a structural case marker that indicates the NP’s subjecthood, and supports the view that Korean sentences are not structured in terms of the relation of predication, i.e. the syntactic relation of ‘subejct-predicate’ is not viable for the Korean grammar. The another main point to be made in this paper is that presence or absence of ‘ga’ is sensitive to the information structure of the sentence; when the responsible actor is focused, then ‘ga’ is obligatorily used for the purpose of embossing the actor. If it is not focused, then ‘ga’ is optional; when the responsible actor functions as the topic of a sentence, then it does not appear, but it does appear when it gets prominence as part of the comment.
