The number of single mothers who choose to raise their child on their own rather than put them up for adoption has increased rapidly in recent years. These single mothers encounter difficulties because they are raising their children in substandard conditions. Therefore, I have implemented CPRT with group art therapy to enhance the mother-child relationship of single mothers and their infants or preschool children and validated the effects. For the purpose of this study, the subjects were single mothers raising children aged 12 months to 4-years. There were five child-parent pairs in the experimental group and another five in the control group. I implemented CPRT with group art therapy to the experimental group. The program consisted of 10 sessions, one session per week for 90-minutes each; the control group received no therapy. I implemented the Mann-Whitney U Test to validify pre-homogeneity of each factor between the experimental and the control group. And used the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-ranks test, which is a nonparametric test, to compare differences between pretest and protest scores related to parenting guilt, parenting efficacy, and the mother-child relationship between the experimental group and the control group.
The results of this study are summarized as follows. First, CPRT with group art therapy was found to reduce guilt among single mothers and its subfactors, such as guilt of raising others, care, and the role of the parent. Second, CPRT with group art therapy shows to increase single mothers’ parenting efficacy and its subfactors, such as overall raising ability, healthy raising ability, communication, study guidance, and discipline. Third, CPRT with group art therapy shows to enhancement the mother-child relationship and its subfactors, such as sense of closeness, conflict, and dependence were changed meaningfully while also showing positive effects on the enhancement of the mother-child relationship overall. Accordingly, this study proved the effects of CPRT with group art therapy on the improvement of the mother-child relationship of single mothers.
